One of the most significant trends in healthcare today is the shift of surgical procedures from an inpatient to an outpatient setting. Hospitals are still large providers of outpatient surgery, however they continue to lose market share to more cost-efficient outpatient surgery centers. Over the past decade, inpatient surgical procedures in hospitals declined from 15.7 million to 9.7 million. During the same period, outpatient surgical procedures increased from 2.6 million to 13.5 million, a five-fold increase.

Other studies show the proportion of surgical procedures performed in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) increased from 17.7% in 1991 to an anticipated 25.4% by 2001. In contrast, hospital outpatient departments declined from 74.4% in 1991 to 62.4% in 1996 and are expected to reach a low of 54.8% by the year 2001.

By year 2002, industry sources estimate that approximately 30 million surgical procedures will be performed on an outpatient basis.
